Former cricketer Carl Hooper blamed the national selection and head coach, Daren Sammy, for the West Indies’ continued slide.
His comments come after the team suffered a crushing defeat to Australia in the recently finished three-match Test series at home, the last of which saw them bowled out for just 27, the second-lowest total in red-ball internationals.
Hooper also regretted the fact that what he saw as hard-earned accomplishments over the previous few years had been erased as a result of the recently finished drubbing.
“Somebody has to be accountable. I believe he is also the only selector, so image someone picking the Australian squad while also serving as head coach – he has all of the power, and he must be held accountable. “I know that’s not going to happen, and you’re not going to remove him,” Carl Hooper told ABC Sport.
“It’s been quite disheartening. I’m angry and unhappy because I believe we were developing something excellent a few years ago. Then, there were sweeping changes. And to see this as the end result is as if what we’ve been trying to construct for the last two, three years has just gone up in flames today,” he added.
We don’t have easy opponents; it will be tough: Carl Hooper
The ex-all-rounder, who appeared disappointed after the clean sweep, believed the country should try to move on from this defeat as quickly as possible.
The Caribbean team is set to face India and England, the red-ball cricket giants, in the coming months, and the 58-year-old has requested improved preparation from Sammy and Co.
“Where are you going from here?” We have India coming up in a couple of months for a three (two)-Test series, which will be tough. So it’s not like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. We don’t have any easy opponents; it’s going to be difficult. So you just have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try to prepare for India,” Cooper said.
