David Bedingham was a key member of Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s SA20 2025 squad. He helped the two-time champions advance to the tournament’s final in the third edition by opening the batting and hitting three fast-moving knocks.
According to current reports, the right-handed batter was getting married this weekend to his fiancée, Jenna van Niekerk. However, he recognised that he had unintentionally put himself in a difficult situation because the SA20 2025 was set for Saturday, February 8.
David Bedingham made the decision to move the wedding to Sunday in order to participate in the summit clash.
South African cricket writer Firdose Moonda stated that Bedingham was fortunate to have an option. “The wedding was booked and planned, but then SEC made the final, so now he has moved the wedding to tomorrow,” Moonda said.
There was a great chance for Sunrisers to win three straight SA20 championships. They defeated the Paarl Royals in the Qualifier 2 and the Johannesburg Super Kings in the Eliminator, and at the end of the league phase, they were ranked third on the points table.
On Saturday, February 8, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town faced off in the final at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The latter chose to bat first after winning the toss. In their 20 overs, Cape Town reached 181/8 thanks to daring knocks from Ryan Rickelton, Connor Esterhuizen, and Dewald Brevis.
After being bowled out for a mere 105 in 18.4 overs, Sunrisers lost by 76 runs. The losing team’s best scorer, Tom Abell, scored 30 runs off of 25 balls. Bedingham, on the other hand, only scored five runs off eight balls. Kagiso Rabada scored four runs, but Trent Boult’s outstanding bowling stats of 2/9 in four overs earned him the Player of the Match title.
After finishing as the top wicket-taker, Marco Jansen was named Player of the Tournament. In 13 games, he took 19 wickets at an average of 18.42.
