The senior men’s selection committee met on October 2, 2024, and selected an 18-member Delhi state team roster. At their meeting at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Delhi & District Cricket Association’s (DDCA) selectors decided on the team for the first few Ranji Trophy games of the forthcoming season.
Himmat Singh, a 27-year-old batsman, was chosen to captain the team. The last time he played in a competitive first-class match was in the Ranji Trophy, where he was limited to 411 runs in 12 innings. In order to motivate his team even more during the 2024–2025 season, he intends to step it up. The absence of Indian cricket players Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, who had previously been included in the Delhi Ranji Team’s probables, however, caught everyone off guard.
Notably, the Ranji Trophy season of 2012–2013 marked Kohli’s final Delhi appearance. Pant has also been absent from domestic cricket for a considerable amount of time. In addition, Himmat’s backup will probably be Ayush Badoni, who has become quite popular while playing for the Lucknow Super Giants since the 2022 Indian Premier League season. The inclusion of India bowler Navdeep Saini, who has been absent for some time, in the squad is another notable development. He hasn’t played for the Indian team since 2021, and his form and health have kept him out of contention.
But as the just concluded Duleep Trophy made clear to everyone, he has been playing excellently lately. In addition to other well-known cricket players, Yash Dhull was mentioned. The talented batsman who batted first and was a key member of the U-19 World Cup winning team will be looking to improve his Ranji Trophy figures. Only one fifty and the same number of tonnes were registered by him in the tournament’s prior edition.
With his compelling off-spin, Hrithik Shokeen, another rising talent, will be looking to contribute significantly for Delhi on tracks that have buy. As anticipated, the selectors have chosen a couple of wicketkeeper-batters. Anuj Rawat and Pranav Rajuvanshi, two regulars for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), have been selected. Harsh Tyagi, a promising left-arm orthodox, has also been added.
In addition to them, Simarjeet Singh, a right-arm medium fast, was added to the team. However, because of his ongoing injury issues, youthful Divij Mehra will be travelling with the team in the event that the physiotherapists declare the Chennai Super Kings player unfit before to the game.
Delhi hopes to improve upon the previous edition’s results.
In the Ranji Trophy 2024, Mumbai won their 42nd title in the competition, as Delhi missed out on a quarterfinal berth by placing third in Group D.
