On Sunday, March 23, star pacer Deepak Chahar made his Mumbai Indians (MI) debut at Chennai’s storied MA Chidambaram Stadium, playing against his former team, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It was the first ‘El-Clasico’ in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), with the Men in Yellow defeating the five-time winners by four wickets.
However, Chahar put in a strong performance against his old team, showcasing his versatility. When the first delivery of the 17th over cost Mumbai their seventh wicket for 118 runs, he came out to bat. Mumbai reached a valiant 155/9 in 20 overs thanks to the seam-bowling all-rounder’s two fours and numerous sixes. In his second over, the 32-year-old took Rahul Tripathi out with the ball. Chahar’s final two-over figures were 1/18.
Following his outstanding performance, Deepak Chahar’s sister Malti posted a humorous meme on social media to show her joy. The main character in the well-known Telugu film “Baahubali” is stabbed by his own uncle, Kattappa, according to Malti, who made fun of her brother for playing against his old side.

The Chennai Super Kings defeated the Mumbai Indians in their opening IPL 2025 match.
As for the game, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma revived the innings after Khaleel Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin claimed three wickets for Chennai during the powerplay. But the MI innings was derailed as Noor Ahmad hit a four-for through the middle overs.
Tripathi was dismissed early in Chennai’s chase of the 156-run goal, but Ruturaj Gaikwad performed a brilliant knock at No. 3. By scoring 53 off of 26 balls, he significantly reduced the asking rate. Opening batsman Rachin Ravindra held the fort while CSK’s middle-order batsmen threw away their wickets. With five balls remaining, the hosts won thanks to the southpaw’s unbeaten 65* off 45 balls.
The next home game for CSK is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday, March 28. On Saturday, March 29, Mumbai will play the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
