There will be no T20 World Cup matches played at Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Dominica. The tournament is scheduled to start on June 3, 2024. Notification of the current development has been sent to Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). The stadium was supposed to host three matches, comprising two Super Eight matches and one group stage match.
Out of the seven West Indies nations that expressed interest in hosting the super tournament, Windsor Park Sports Stadium was one. But only seven months before the competition, the Windsor Park Sports Stadium government made it clear that the contractors had informed them that they would not be able to complete the work within the allotted time and that the stadium would not be ready in that short of a time.
It was evident from the implementation schedules provided by the several contractors that these works could not be finished in the allotted time before the competition started. It would not be prudent for the administration of Windsor Park Sports Stadiuma to commit to hosting these games; hence, the decision was made not to host any of the matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, according to a statement from the Dominican administration.
It further stated, “This decision is considered to be in the best interest of all, given Dominica’s stellar reputation as a host of international cricket matches.”
We are excited to collaborate in the future with the Dominica Cricket Association and the Government of Dominica. Johnny Grave
Meanwhile, CWI CEO Johnny Grave stated that the board recognizes Dominica’s challenges in organizing the competition and anticipates continued efforts in the future. Additionally, he mentioned that the timetable is anticipated to be released very soon and that the board is actively collaborating with the ICC and USA Cricket to finalize the arrangements.
“We appreciate the Dominican Republic’s government’s hard work in getting ready to host games at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024. We acknowledge their devotion, take heed of the justifications provided, and comprehend the stance taken. In the future, we’re excited to collaborate with the Dominican Republic’s government and the Dominican Cricket Association to hold international matches, Grave added.
