At the National Stadium in Karachi on Saturday, March 1, South Africa defeated England by seven wickets with 125 deliveries remaining in Match 11 of the Champions Trophy 2025. With this, they advanced from Group B to the knockout stage alongside Australia.
On the second and fourth deliveries of the first over, Phil Salt hit a few of boundaries to start the English innings. But in yet another frantic innings, Marco Jansen had the final laugh by getting rid of the opener. In his next over, the tall left-arm pacer dismissed another player. England were 62/3 at the end of the 10-over mark, and Jansen had taken all three of their wickets.
Harry Brook and Joe Root both contributed significant runs to the scoreboard. But by the end of the 18th over, the English were five down when both batsmen were dismissed in quick succession. The Proteas never allowed England to escape their grasp, and it was a traditional middle overs squeeze. The captain was the ninth wicket to go, as Jos Buttler ultimately ran out of partners. In the end, England was dismissed for 179 in 38.2 overs.
For South Africa, moving Tristan Stubbs up the order did not work out well.
Jofra Archer took his first wicket of the evening as he was out for a five-ball duck. Saqib Mahmood did not exactly put as much pressure on the batting lineup as Archer had, despite the fact that Archer had started off rather promisingly. Even though Ryan Rickelton was dismissed in the same manner as Stubbs, South Africa was still positioned rather well at 58/2.
Rassie van der Dussen was joined in the centre by Heinrich Klaasen. As they edged closer to the target by milking runs in the middle overs, the two batters worked effectively together. The English bowlers did not pose a danger to their position. Adil Rashid took a consolation wicket for the unfortunate English team when the two batters were within inches from their objective, breaking the 127-run stand.
