The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland have begun talks to create a joint Great Britain men’s and women’s cricket squad for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Cricket’s return to the Games as a six-team T20 competition for both sexes was finalised by the LA28 organising committee. This is the sport’s first Olympic appearance since Great Britain won gold in 1900.
In order to participate in the Olympics, Cricket Scotland CEO Trudy Lindblade revealed that negotiations are in progress with the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the European Cricket Board (ECB) to establish a single Team GB cricket organisation.
Because of our excellent working relationship with the ECB,
We have been in discussions with them and are currently trying to create a Team GB cricket body. For a British team to compete at the Olympic Games, the British Olympic Association (BOA) requires that. BBC Radio 4 spoke with Trudy Lindblade, the chief executive officer of Cricket Scotland.
The six teams would provide us a chance through the GB concept, which makes it really intriguing. There is still much to be determined about how qualification is handled, not only for those six teams, but also how a GB squad would be chosen if they were to qualify. We will keep in touch with the ECB, as well as our friends at LA 2028 and ICC, so these are exciting times. Lindblade stated, “It will be interesting.”
A temporary location at the Pomona Fairplex in Los Angeles will host the matches. Protocols for the qualification procedure and squad selection have not yet been decided.
The last time a Great Britain football team competed in the Olympics was in London in 2012; LA 2028 is expected to see a similar resurgence.
