Shubman Gill entered the England trip with a Test average of 35.06. His abilities as a batter in red-ball settings was called into question. However, the 25-year-old has hushed his detractors by reaching two hundreds and a double century in his first four innings of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
Shubman Gill made 147 runs in the first innings of the first Test at Headingley, but he was dismissed cheaply in the second.
However, in the current second Test at Edgbaston, Gill has performed admirably in both innings. He hit a career-high 269 in the first innings and backed it up with a 162-ball 161 in the second.
Marcus Trescothick, former England opener and current batting coach, was asked after the fourth day of play what he thought about witnessing the Punjab batsman bat.
“Well, I’m tired of seeing him (Gill) bat. As much as I enjoy watching hitters get runs. He has performed incredibly well in both games, but especially in this one. Getting 250 followed by another 150 is quite unusual. Few people have run as many times as this. So you’ve got to appreciate his passion, attention, fitness, and skill level to go out and do it,” Trescothick said in an interview with BBC Sport.
