India finished Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston with a commanding lead, restricting England to 72/3 in their chase of 608. The visitors dominated in all departments, driven by Shubman Gill’s historic batting and the speed combo of Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, who picked up early wickets in England’s second innings.
India’s total was built on the efforts of skipper Gill, who backed up his 269 in the first innings with a 161 off only 162 balls in the second. Gill became the first Indian to score over 400 runs in a single Test, and he is only the second Indian player in history to achieve a double century and a century in the same match, following Sunil Gavaskar.
After KL Rahul (55) and Karun Nair (26) gave India a solid start on Day 4, Gill accelerated his batting after lunch. He shared a 110-run stand with Rishabh Pant, who scored 65 off 58 deliveries. Gill scored a century soon before tea, and Ravindra Jadeja followed with 69* off 118 balls.
The skipper’s performance increased India’s second-innings total to 427/6 declared, setting England a record mark of 608.
The hosts’ top order once again collapsed under pressure. Siraj got rid of Zak Crawley for a duck in the second over. Soon after, Akash Deep, who was brilliant in the first innings with four wickets, rattled Ben Duckett and later returned to dismiss Joe Root. At stumps, England ended on 72/3 in 16 overs, still needing 536 runs for victory. Ollie Pope (24)* and Harry Brook (15)* are set to continue their batting on the final day of the Test match.
