Assistant coaches for the England men’s team have been recruited for the 2023 edition of The Hundred, which will run from August 1 to August 27 and last nearly a month. After the conclusion of the current Ashes 2023 Test series in England, the 100-ball competition will commence.
Richard Dawson will join Michael Hussey at Welsh Fire, while Carl Hopkinson will join James Foster at Northern Superchargers. Paul Collingwood, England’s assistant coach for Brendon McCullum in Tests, will serve in the competition for the London Spirit, who are coached by Trevor Bayliss, the former England coach.
Matthew Mott, England white-ball coach, encouraged Dawson and Hopkinson to pursue positions in The Hundred, stating that their contributions would benefit the England team in the long run. Additionally, the 49-year-old stated that it is crucial for the team to have additional eyes and hearing in such camps, which will only yield positive results.
“They’ve both been a part of the county scene for a considerable amount of time, and I believe they’ll do well in the Hundred. They have an excellent opportunity. It’s fantastic that we also have eyes and ears in those locations – even just around the international players who are arriving. It’s almost as if there were a few scouts present, with additional eyes and hearing. Mott told ESPN cricinfo that there is no downside to this development.
England’s white-ball coach has a wealth of coaching experience and has produced astounding results.
Notably, Matthew Mott was slated to coach Welsh Fire Women in The Hundred’s inaugural season, but he bowed out due to travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. He is however willing to engage in franchise cricket. In addition, he served as assistant coach for the first two seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Interestingly, Mott became England’s white-ball men’s coach in May 2022, following an incredible success with Australia’s women’s team. During his seven-year tenure, Mott assisted the Australians in winning two T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup, and four Ashes series. In addition, Mott has won 26 consecutive matches in the 50-over format.
