The renowned Edgbaston stadium in Birmingham will host the second Test between England and India from July 2 to July 6. After a painful loss at Headingley, where India squandered a commanding lead, the visitors will look to even the five-match series. India has not had much luck at Edgbaston in the past, with eight matches played and no wins.
Edgbaston Pitch Report
The Edgbaston surface is recognised for its complexity. On Day 1, the pitch is likely to provide swing and seam movement, particularly in cloudy conditions. With 11mm of grass reported two days before the match and a dry surface beneath, seamers will have a big advantage in the beginning. Traditionally, teams that bowl first have had more success at Edgbaston, winning 23 of 56 Tests.
Batting becomes simpler as the match proceeds, particularly on days 2 and 3, when the surface is flatter. Spinners will, however, play an important part on Days 4 and 5, as the tough patches arise. Edgbaston is one of the least spin-friendly venues in England this decade, with spinners averaging more than 44 per wicket.
Edgbaston Weather Forecast
The weather in Birmingham is set to play an important role in the second Test. Accuweather predicts a high possibility of rain on Day 1 (July 2), with 82% chance of precipitation and 86% cloud cover. These circumstances will benefit quick bowlers. It could be a stop-start day, with teams that bowl first likely to succeed early on.
Day 2 (July 3) is forecast to have a 5% chance of rain and a 37% cloud cover. This should create optimal batting conditions. Day 3 (July 4) is forecast to be dry but gloomy, with 99% cloud cover. Despite the low likelihood of precipitation, the bowlers will continue to play. Rain is expected to return on Day 4 (July 5), with a 66% chance of precipitation and 98% cloud coverage predicted. Day 5 (July 6) has a 60% probability of rain and 78% cloud coverage, putting the entire day’s play at danger.
