The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced in a statement on March 21 (Friday) that England Women had split with head coach Jon Lewis. Since taking over as manager in November 2022, Lewis has led the squad to victory in 52 of their 73 games in all formats.
Following England’s humiliating 16-0 loss to Australia at the Ashes, in which they failed to win a single match, Jon Lewis resigns.
Additionally, England did not go past the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 group rounds.
“I’ve had a great time leading the England women’s team. Lewis said in a statement, “Unfortunately, I will not be able to complete this extremely difficult but rewarding task of building this young team while winning and expanding the women’s game in this country.”
“I have put a lot of effort into helping this group of young players improve their knowledge and abilities in contemporary white-ball cricket, and we are still making good progress in 2024—winning 83% of our games. I’m happy to report that 2023 and 2024 saw record-breaking attendance, and I’m committed to doing everything in my power to advance women’s cricket. I thank the players for allowing me to be a part of their adventures and wish them all the best.
“I’d like to thank Jon Lewis for all he has given in his time as Head Coach,” stated Clare Connor, ECB Managing Director, England Women, in reference to Lewis’ efforts over the past two years. Creating the ideal environment for the team to thrive and grow was one of his top concerns when he took over the position following a particularly trying time for cricket players during the pandemic.
“There is no question about the talent we have available, and we will look to find a replacement immediately, despite the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes in Australia being disappointing. In addition to competing in two World Cups over the next 15 months, including the T20 World Cup in this nation next year, we must be prepared for a thrilling summer of international cricket.
Lewis’s UP Warriorz team came last in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, thus things did not go well for him either.
