WATCH: Faf du Plessis reminded of MS Dhoni’s 2016 run-out by Donovan Ferreira’s glovework in SA20 match

Donovan Ferreira nearly replicated one of the most legendary T20 game finishes in history in the first match of the SA20 2025-26 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, similar to the one that occurred in the group stage encounter between India and Bangladesh at the 2016 World Cup in Bangalore. Ferreira, the wicketkeeper for the Johannesburg Super Kings, caused a run out on the final ball of the innings to ensure that the Durban Super Giants did not cross the finish line.

The match was deadlocked until the Super Kings won with the Super Over. Meanwhile, their captain Faf du Plessis was reminded of MS Dhoni‘s brilliant glove performance in 2016, which secured India’s victory in a nail-biting fight.

The scenes were identical, but this time, the match was deadlocked and eventually won by Faf du Plessis & Co.

“Yeah, I mean, I remember there was a game a long time ago when MS Dhoni was standing behind the stumps for India. I think it was against Bangladesh in the World Cup. And I remember the guy batting like a almost like a cut ball across him. And I think Dinesh Karthik or someone was. And it was that was like this memory in the back of my head. And I said to him, just go short across him and hopefully we get a wicket. I wasn’t banking on a run out. So we’re bowling for run-outs now,” du Plessis described at the post-match party.

Speaking more about the match, Ferreira made truly one of the best all-round performances in a T20 match. Apart from the brilliant run out induced with presence of mind, the South African cricketer also hit a blazing cameo of 33* from just 10 balls, and read figures of 1/24 with the ball. The run-out, however, was like an icing on the cake.
