Farhan Ahmed, 17, made history as the first Nottinghamshire player to score a hat-trick in T20 cricket. In the last Vitality Blast game at Trent Bridge, the teenage off-spinner’s outstanding stint of 5 for 25 helped Nottinghamshire to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Lancashire.
Farhan, the younger brother of England’s Rehan Ahmed, has previously made headlines for his record-breaking red-ball heroics, including becoming Nottinghamshire’s youngest first-class cricketer and then the youngest in Britain to take ten wickets in a single match.
Lancashire, having already qualified for the quarter-finals, began this last group-stage match under less pressure. Nottinghamshire, on the other hand, were playing for dignity and had little odds of qualifying due to a low net run rate.
Lancashire batted first and got off to a strong start, with Phil Salt and Keaton Jennings contributing 38 runs.
Liam Patterson-White broke the opening stand, and Farhan Ahmed later exploited Trent Bridge’s twisting surface.
He scooped up Chris Green’s wicket and returned in the final over to complete a remarkable hat trick. On the fourth delivery of the 20th over, he dismissed Luke Wood, Tom Aspinwall, and Mitchell Stanley to clinch his hat-trick, Nottinghamshire’s first in T20s. Lancashire were dismissed for 126 after he bowled 5-25 in five overs.

Nottinghamshire’s chase began disastrously, with England spinner Tom Hartley taking four wickets in three overs. However, Tom Moores served as the crisis manager. Moores, who has been in blistering form this season, delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 75 off 42 balls.
His innings included a critical 81-run partnership with Lyndon James (20), which helped Notts get back into the game. Despite James falling with 32 needed off 50 balls, Moores and Daniel Sams led the side home with ease. Moores was eventually run out with the scores level, but the team sealed the match with the next ball, resulting in a four-wicket win.
