The Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam hosted the opening match of the Delhi Capitals’ (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) IPL 2025 season on Monday. Even though DC was playing at home, the game was played away from Delhi, marking the second year in a row that they had made Visakhapatnam their secondary home.
Axar Patel chose to field first in his first toss as captain of DC, and KL Rahul was absent for personal reasons. Nevertheless, LSG scored a solid 209/8 in their 20 overs. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran controlled the innings, giving LSG the advantage with their powerful knocks.
With six fours and six sixes in a rapid 72 off 36 balls, Marsh was the attack early on. In just 21 balls, he achieved his half-century, which is his second-fastest half-century in T20 cricket. Before being finally removed by Mukesh Kumar in the twelfth over, he tormented the DC bowlers.
Pooran, however, kept up the attack, reaching his fifty in twenty-four balls. Tristan Stubbs specifically attacked him, hitting him for 28 runs in one over, including four sixes and a boundary. In the fifteenth over, Mitchell Starc cleaned up the southpaw, who ultimately fell for 75 off 30 balls.
In addition, David Miller was instrumental, hitting two consecutive sixes in the last two balls of the innings and scoring an undefeated 27 off 19 balls. Shahbaz Ahmed, Ayush Badoni, and others contributed, but wickets continued to tumble in the closing stages. The first-time captain of LSG, Rishabh Pant, had a disappointing batting performance, scoring a six-ball duck.
The bowlers for the Delhi Capitals had a mixed performance. Despite being costly and giving up 42 runs in four overs, Starc was able to capture three vital wickets, including the dangerous Pooran. The best bowler was Kuldeep Yadav, who dismissed both Pant and Badoni with a final score of 2/20 in his four overs. Patel was frugal, and Mukesh and rookie Vipraj Nigam both took a wicket.
The Delhi Capitals will need a major improvement from their batting unit in order to win when they are chasing 210. They have the firepower with big names like Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Faf du Plessis in the lineup, but it will be crucial how they execute.
