On Tuesday, April 8, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 21 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) match at the Eden Gardens with a commanding first-innings total of 238/3.
Ajinkya Rahane chose to bowl on a hot and muggy afternoon in the City of Joy, despite the fact that captains typically like to bat first in afternoon matches. During an inspiring 99-run partnership, LSG’s opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markam made life difficult for the KKR bowlers with some spectacular strokes.
In the eleventh over, Harshit Rana provided KKR a much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Markram for a 47 off of 28 balls. But this forced Nicholas Pooran, who was playing well, to the crease. With Marsh, he scored 71 runs off of just 30 balls. Andre Russell finally got rid of the Australian T20 captain for a 48-ball 81 in the 16th over.
To capitalise on the short boundary on one side, LSG moved Abdul Samad up the order. But it was Pooran’s responsibility to lead LSG to victory. In his undefeated knock of 87 off 36 balls, the former West Indies T20 captain blasted seven fours and eight sixes. Rana let up 51 runs in his four overs despite taking two wickets for the Knight. The only bowler for the KKR to finish with an economy rate below eight was Varun Chakaravarthy. He was unable to take a wicket, though.
Following the conclusion of the first innings, Marsh stated that as the ball grew older, batting became easier. He also described the things he does in the background to get better at batting.
“Honestly, I thought 180–190 was par, but as the ball grew older, it hit the bat more effectively. We are undoubtedly fortunate to have Pooran on our side. It’s good to bat with Markram, even if I’ve played against him a lot. Our style of play is conventional. We strive to make accurate cricket shots. The outfield is quick and the field is small. I’ve been maintaining my routine and way of thinking. I try to enjoy myself while watching the ball. I hope to continue scoring runs in the future. “I’m hoping to see the boys win,” Marsh said to the official broadcaster.
