At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Indian Premier League 2025 got underway in spectacular fashion with a glittering opening ceremony that included Punjabi wonder Karan Aujla, Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, singer Shreya Ghoshal, and actress Disha Patani.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and chose to bowl first in the thrilling season opener between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and RCB.
After dismissing Quinton de Kock for just 4 runs in the opening over, Josh Hazlewood made an early impression. KKR was not deterred by the early setback, though, as Sunil Narine and captain Ajinkya Rahane quickly stabilised the innings. The reigning champions got off to a strong start with Rahane scoring a half-century off of 25 balls, and the pair easily crossed the fence with their 103-run combination off just 55 balls.
Rasikh Salam gave the team the break just as it looked like they would reach a huge total by hitting Narine for 44 off 26 balls.
After that, Rahane (56 off 31) and Venkatesh Iyer (6 off 7) were quickly removed by Krunal Pandya, who shifted the game in the RCB’s favour.
At one point, KKR was at 107/1 in 10 overs, but they were suddenly having trouble at 125/4.
As crucial wickets fell, KKR’s innings stalled. After attempting to manage the innings, Rinku Singh was quickly removed by Krunal, who finished with figures of 3/29 in four overs, for 12 off 10 balls. After failing to produce, Andre Russell was dismissed by Suyash Sharma for a just four runs.
Although Angkrish Raghuvanshi put up a fight with a vital thirty off twenty-two balls, the pressure was maintained by RCB’s bowlers, especially Hazlewood (2/22) and Yash Dayal (1/25). After Harshit Rana was dismissed in the last over, KKR was reduced to 174/8 in the 20 overs given to them by Ramandeep Singh (6*) and Spencer Johnson (1*).
With a victory margin of 175 runs, RCB’s batting lineup—which includes Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, and Rajat Patidar—will try to reach the goal and get their IPL 2025 campaign off to a strong start.
