On Wednesday, April 2, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) overcame a risky start to conclude the first innings of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Gujarat Titans (GT) with a valiant total of 169/8.
In front of a crowded stadium in the Indian Garden City, Shubman Gill chose to field first after winning the toss. Gujarat’s first blood was drawn by Arshad Khan, who got rid of Virat Kohli in the second over. In the meantime, Mohammed Siraj took advantage of the favourable circumstances to dismiss Phil Salt and Devdutt Padikkal during the powerplay. The hosts fell to 4/42 as RCB captain Rajat Patidar was removed in the seventh over.
A much-needed partnership of 52 runs for the fifth wicket off 38 balls was knitted together by Jitesh Sharma and Liam Livingstone. The wicketkeeper-batter appeared to be in form, but after scoring 33 off of 21 balls, R Sai Kishore left the crease. As RCB faced defeat at 104/6 in the 15th over, the left-arm spinner also claimed the wicket of Krunal Pandya.
Jos Buttler lost an opportunity to stump Livingstone, and he was dropped twice. By hitting three sixes off the 18th over, which was bowled by Rashid Khan, the England all-rounder contributed some vital runs towards the finish of the innings. He reached a half-century off 39 balls with the third six.
Livingstone was dismissed for a score of 54 off 40 balls when Siraj returned to bowl the penultimate over and claimed the crucial wicket. The pacer from Hyderabad finished with three for. Tim David helped RCB set a goal of 170 runs with his 32 off 18 deliveries, playing a magnificent hand at the end. The new ball gave the pacers a fair amount of assistance, and the spinners also found respectable rotation, so this isn’t a typical Chinnaswamy surface.
R Sai Kishore, who finished with outstanding figures of 2/22 in his four overs, acknowledged that he found purchase off the surface following the first innings. He claimed that his success came from following his gut and bowling like a red-ball game.
“You never know until both teams bowl on it, but I thought that when you bowled into the wicket, it was helping the spinners. I tried to bowl as hard as I could, bowling like a real red-ball game, after getting a decent shape on the ball. You have to continuously changing to stay relevant in T20 cricket, and I trusted my gut enough to follow my gut. I get a little dip on it, but I can’t tell what it is. It’s like a carrom ball, and I like to bowl it (on his unique ball),” Kishore remarked on air following the innings.
