India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has admitted that head coach Gautam Gambhir is fairly distinctive in his approach. Bumrah provided insight into Gambhir’s coaching technique ahead of India’s five-match Test series against England, which starts on Friday at Headingley in Leeds.
The right-arm fast bowler stated that Gambhir prefers to address the squad individually rather than in a collective setting. Bumrah noted that the former India opener is going through an intriguing period in Indian cricket.
“He is a really individualistic person. He will have one-on-one conversations with the person where he believes he is required to intervene. You know, when folks are going one way and he has some ideas about it.
“I believe he is overseeing an exciting period in Indian cricket,” Jasprit Bumrah told Sky Sports.
Bumrah stated that the team has undergone certain adjustments and is now in a transitional phase. The 31-year-old emphasised the importance of greater patience and composure, particularly among younger players.
“Our crew was very different two tours ago, and it is currently in the process of transitioning. They will now need to be a lot more patient and calm with the younger guys. He is quite calm in his demeanour, and the players are friendly and cheerful,” he said.
Bumrah also stated that task management was a major reason he never contemplated taking up captaincy. Shubman Gill will lead India on the next tour, taking command of one of the most inexperienced Indian lineups to play in England.
“Before Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) retired, during the IPL, I spoke with the BCCI about the workload for a five-match Test series. I’ve spoken with people who handle my back. We came to the conclusion that we needed to be a little more wise, and I informed the BCCI that I did not want to be considered for the leadership position since I would be unable to play all of the Test matches,” Bumrah said.
