India’s Champions Trophy 2025 victory marked their first ICC trophy under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching. On March 9, India won the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand by a margin of four wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. India currently has three Champions Trophy victories, more than any other team, following this triumph.
Consequently, head coach Gautam Gambhir became one of the greats with India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.
Just five people have won an ICC tournament while playing and coaching, and Gambhir is the fifth player to do so. Along with his former Indian teammate Rahul Dravid, Australians Darren Lehmann and Geoff Marsh, and South African Gary Kirsten, he now joins a renowned list. In his playing career, Gambhir’s contributions to India’s wins in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup were a high point.
After the victory, Gambhir shared a heartfelt post on X, saying, “Congratulations to 1.4 billion Indians, Jay Hind”

In the final, Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand decided to bat and scored 251/7. The foundation of India’s comeback was Rohit Sharma’s incredible performance, which saw him score 76 runs off 83 balls. With crucial cameos from Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, and Hardik Pandya, the side got closer to winning. Finally, on the last ball of the 49th over, Ravindra Jadeja sealed the victory.
After replacing Rahul Dravid as head coach, Gambhir’s Champions Trophy win was his first noteworthy victory. After winning the World Cup in 2003 and 1999, Darren Lehmann, another member of this elite group, guided Australia to victory in the 2015 competition. The father of cricket stars Shaun and Mitchell Marsh, Geoff Marsh, not only won the 1987 World Cup as a player but also had the distinction of being a head coach in 1999.
As a player, Gary Kirsten won the 1998 Champions Trophy (then called the ICC KnockOut Tournament) and is recognised in India for playing a key role in the team’s victory at home in the 2011 World Cup.
