New Zealand has announced its lineup for the second Test against the West Indies in Wellington, including the return of veteran all-rounder Glenn Phillips. With numerous players out due to injuries, the Black Caps have chosen a fresh 14-member squad.
Following a spate of injuries to its key players, the hosts have had to make numerous changes. The forthcoming Wellington Test, which begins on Wednesday, will provide an opportunity for New Zealand to refresh its team while also welcome Phillips.
The all-rounder has been out of the national team since the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. He had been dealing with a groin ailment for about a year, which had kept him away from the longest format. His most recent Test outing was in December of last year against England in Hamilton.
Glenn Phillips’ return comes after New Zealand lost contributors across departments.
Matt Henry, Nathan Smith, Tom Blundell, and Mitchell Santner have all been ruled out with injuries, creating huge voids in the bowling attack and middle order.
With Blundell unavailable, teenage wicketkeeper Mitch Hay is poised to make his Test debut. Kristian Clarke and Michael Rae, uncapped fast bowlers, have been named to the roster alongside Jacob Duffy. Clarke and Rae have both been standout players in New Zealand’s domestic cricket.
Despite the alterations, players like as Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, and Rachin Ravindra are eligible for the game. Notably, the first Test ended in a draw after the visitors produced an outstanding batting performance.
