Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spoilt Gujarat Titans’ (GT) party with a 33-run victory on Thursday, May 22, making the Shubman Gill-led team’s chances of finishing in the top two more difficult.
Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to field first at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which has a fantastic track. Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh once again gave LSG a strong start, scoring 91 runs in the opening ten overs.
Following Markram’s dismissal for 24-ball 36, Marsh and Nicholas Pooran stole the show. Lucknow scored 235/2 thanks to Marsh’s 64-ball 117 and Pooran’s unbeaten 56 from 27 deliveries.
In response, Gujarat’s middle order was put to the test when the in-form trio of Shubman, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler failed to capitalise on their starts on a rare occasion. Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan hung around, but they had too many runs to deal with. The Titans were limited to 202/9 in their 20 overs.

1. Mitchell Marsh scores maiden IPL ton
Marsh took the attack to the Gujarat bowlers from the outset and finished with 117 off 64 balls, belting 10 fours and eight sixes. He reached the three-figure mark off 56 balls. The Australian all-rounder’s partnership of 121 runs off 52 balls helped Lucknow get to a massive total.

2. Shahrukh Khan, Sherfane Rutherford show GT’s middle-order capabilities
Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford did not have many opportunities to show their prowess this season as the GT top-order had been on song. However, on Thursday, they got their chance and the duo showed that they are capable of producing the goods. Rutherford scored a 22-ball 38, while Shahrukh contributed with 57 off 29 deliveries. Their 86-run partnership off 40 balls gave GT hopes of a miraculous win, however, the 235-run target proved too much in the end despite their efforts.

3. William O’Rourke makes the difference with the ball
New Zealand pacer William O’Rourke had a tremendous outing with the ball. With not much assistance available for bowlers, O’Rourke used his variations to great effect and made life difficult for the power hitters. He bagged the wickets of Sudharsan, Rutherford, and Rahul Tewatia, conceding just 27 runs in his four overs.
