Ravichandran Ashwin has addressed the long-running speculation about his connection with Harbhajan Singh, stating that jealousy arises from people’s own mindsets and perspectives. There have been repeated reports on social media that Harbhajan has been envious of Ashwin’s success in Indian cricket.
India has produced two of modern cricket’s best off-spinners, and while Harbhajan and Ashwin played for the national team in entirely different eras, negative rumours about their relationship has lingered. Ashwin, who retired as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, recently spoke with Harbhajan, effectively ending the reported friction between the two.
“Before you respond to this question about envy, let me clarify something. Everyone has their own point of view. For example, if people make a comment about me, they feel that others would see the world through their eyes’, Ashwin teased on his YouTube page in a ‘Kutti Stories’ trailer.
“Their comments that you (Harbhajan) are jealous of this person who is interviewing you today (Ashwin), what would that be about, Bhajji pa?” He enquired.
Ashwin emphasised that, while people may believe their opinions are generally embraced, this is rarely the case in reality. In response to Harbhajan’s inquiry, Ashwin stated that even if envy existed between them, such sentiments may be considered natural in the competitive environment of international cricket. He went on to say that some fans believe his retirement corresponded with Washington Sundar‘s climb up the team’s hierarchy.
“Do you think I’m jealous of you? You’re sitting with me today, and we’ve had a long conversation. Do you believe I’m that type of person? Asked Harbhajan.
“Even if you were envious at one point, I believe it was justified. That is my point, and I will never interpret it incorrectly because we are all human. It is natural for it to be this way. Some people say I retired because Washington Sundar is at the centre of things. “All of this is from the perspective of others,” Ashwin said.
