Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh recently gained attention on social media for his audacious comments on the fan bases of top cricket players like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Singh appeared to take aim at several legendary Indian cricket players during a debate among the experts by disparaging their popularity and fan base as a whole.
The incident happened prior to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The future of Dhoni in the coveted league was discussed. Harbhajan fervently backed the talismanic former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and India to extend his league career.
But when he responded to a query concerning the devoted fan base, his comments apparently offended Virat Kohli’s supporters, who thought the former spin king was making fun of the batsman from Delhi. Notably, Kohli said goodbye to Test cricket a few days ago and was prepared to play for RCB in the current IPL 2025. On Saturday, May 17, however, the match was called off due to weather. This led to a fan war between the supporters of Kohli and MS Dhoni.
As long as he is able, he can play. I would have taken a different course of action if it had been my team. Supporters will want him to keep playing. The others are all on social media and are even paying fans, so I think he has a genuine following. At the Star Sports panel discussion, Harbhajan stated, “Leave them out because if we start talking about that, the conversation will go in a different direction.”
It’s interesting to note that another Indian cricket player on the panel was Aakash Chopra. ‘The Turbanator,’ also known as Bhajji, was speaking, and he was paying close attention. The harsh comment seemed to catch him off guard, and he replied that it seemed too wonderful to be true.
“Itna bhi sach nahi bolna tha,” Chopra said.

Dhoni expected to feature in IPL 2026 edition
Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh further added that fans want to see MS Dhoni play for a long time. Notably, some reports claimed that Dhoni is most likely to continue his illustrious IPL career for another season. However, he did add that had he been the skipper of CSK, he might have taken a different decision altogether.
