Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, became the first captain in IPL history to take five wickets. The Lucknow Super Giants were held to 203/8 in their allocated 20 overs thanks to his outstanding 5 for 36 stint. His record now stands in second place, behind Noot Ahmed, after taking eight wickets in three games during this span.
Pandya’s choice to bowl first earlier appeared to backfire as LSG came out firing. Mitchell Marsh helped LSG reach 69/0 in six overs with a ffifty and a 60 off 31 balls. But after Vignesh Puthur hit Marsh with a return catch in the seventh over, the tide of the match changed.
Pandya then started his heroics. The deadly Nicholas Pooran was his first victim; he was captured at short fine leg after being undone by a slower bouncer. He then dismissed LSG captain Rishabh Pant, who went out for just two runs after failing to fire once again. Pant attempted to paddle a slower ball, but Corbin Bosch, a backup fielder, caught it instead.
Then, in an attempt to steady the innings, Ayush Badoni and Aiden Markram put together a 51-run partnership. Markram’s first fifty for LSG, which came at a crucial moment, was 53 off 38. However, Pandya hit once more right when LSG was about to increase their advantage. He got rid of Markram in the eighteenth over with a slower one that Raj Bawa caught superbly in the deep.
The all-rounder completed his first IPL fifer, a first for any IPL skipper, in the 20th over after defeating David Miller, who had hammered a quickfire 27, and Akash Deep off consecutive deliveries. Even with the Pandya performance, LSG was still able to reach their first 200-plus score at home because to Badoni’s 19-ball 30 and Miller and Abdul Samad’s cameos.
In the meantime, the Mumbai Indians would have a difficult time chasing 204 without Rohit Sharma. Due to a knee ailment, Rohit was unable to participate in this match. Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, and the middle-order combination of Pandya and Tilak Varma will be responsible for MI’s batting in his absence.
Here’s how the fans reacted to Hardik Pandya’s five-wicket haul against LSG:
People who were mocking Hardik Pandya for Rohit Sharma should have some shame.
Anyday he gave more contribution than Rohit Sharma!! pic.twitter.com/hXH1u4hv3G— Cameron (@CameronBhai) April 4, 2025
