At the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, March 7, Gujarat Giants Women defeated Delhi Capitals Women by five wickets in Match 17 of the Women’s Premier League 2025. Gujarat achieved their fourth victory in the current campaign with this triumph.
Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning got off to a quick start. In the first powerplay, they combined to score 51. Of the two, the Delhi captain was the more aggressive. Lanning appeared ready for a huge knock after hitting seven boundaries in the first six. The Gujarat team was not likely to make a breakthrough. The way the two had handled the powerplay suggested that a large total was probably in the cards.
Meghna Singh ended up taking three wickets at the end of her four-over session. Her first dismissal was Shafali. Following Jemimah Rodrigues’s relatively inexpensive fall, Lanning had to slightly modify her strategy. Even though the Australian top-order batswoman was dismissed for her highest WPL score of 92, Delhi reached 177 at the conclusion of 20 overs, but the remainder of the batting lineup put on a rather lacklustre show.
When it comes to their run-chase, Gujarat didn’t get off to the best start possible. Early on, they lost Dayalan Hemalatha.
Hemalatha’s poor season continued as the top-order batsman left after just managing one run off seven deliveries. The bowler that produced the wicket was Shikha Pandey. At the end of the powerplay, Gujarat was scoring just 38 runs, much below the necessary run rate. At the midway point, their odds were 75/1.
Harleen Deol was the set batsman at the crease after Beth Mooney left the game six runs short of her half-century. Ashleigh Gardner added a useful 13-ball 22 to the total. Gujarat desperately needed the late push, and Deandra Dottin delivered it with 32 needed off 18. Deol and Kashvee Gautam led their team to a successful run-chase, but Jess Jonassen’s successive wickets added a late twist to the match.

What a comeback from Gujarat Giants under Ashleigh Gardner’s captaincy.
– Giants are turning the tables on their own.
– They have now won their last 3 games.
– Gujarat Giants are now 2nd ranked team in the table.#WPL pic.twitter.com/cyYizwjEMs— Inside out (@INSIDDE_OUT) March 7, 2025
It’s no surprise that UP Warriorz have become the first team to be knocked out of WPL 2025. With one league game left, they still don’t know their best XI.#WPL2025
