With a spectacular performance against the Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur made history by being the second batter to reach 1000 runs in the Women’s Premier League, behind teammate Nat Sciver-Brunt. Additionally, she became the first Indian player in WPL history to score more than 1000 runs.
MI’s stunning seven-wicket victory over GG at Navi Mumbai marked the milestone. The right-hander performed a captain’s knock, an undefeated 71 off 43 balls with seven fours and two sixes, to lead her team home with four balls remaining while chasing a massive 193. She is currently the season’s top run scorer and also won the Orange Cap.
Kaur’s consistency over the years is further demonstrated by the fact that she became the first batter in WPL history to reach 10 half-centuries, surpassing both Nat Sciver-Brunt and UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning, who each had nine. With a strike rate of 146.18 and an average of 46.18, she has now amassed 1,016 runs in 30 games and 29 innings.
Large sums are increasingly typical: Harmanpreet
In his remarks during the post-match speeches, the 36-year-old discussed the tournament’s high scoring requirements and how to bat in certain circumstances.
“I believe that scores like these are becoming commonplace these days. You must score nearly 200 if you are batting first. These kinds of totals must also be pursued if you’re pursuing. That’s the mindset. You have to bat for your team every time you go out. “That clarity is helpful,” Kaur added.
The Moga native has ten half-centuries, which is the most in the history of the competition. She also holds the record for most fifties in the WPL against a single opponent, having completed five of them against the Gujarat-based team. Surprised by her impressive performance against the Gujarat Giants, Harmanpreet stated that her objective is to perform well for the team regardless of the opponent.
“I didn’t know that statistic (5 fifties vs Gujarat), but every game matters to me.” All I want to do is bat for my team. “I’ll accept whatever comes my way,” she said.
After a few victories and a defeat in their three WPL 2026 games, MI’s victory put them in second place in the standings.
