Harshit Rana, an Indian youth, has been retained in England as an unofficial member of the Indian squad and backup option. A member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Rana will remain with the team to cover for a few players who are apparently suffering with minor niggles.
Harshit Rana, who has played two Tests, five ODIs, and one T20I, has not been nominated to the official roster but remains a member of the team.
On Tuesday, June 17, the right-arm pacer flew from London to Leeds as part of the Indian contingent.
“Please don’t count him as an official member of the squad just yet,” the official remarked, as reported by.
India, led by Shubman Gill, now has a pace-heavy assault that includes five frontline fast bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh. India also has two pace-bowling all-rounders, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur, who give depth to the squad.
Rana had previously been a member of the India A team, which played two matches against the England Lions and participated in an intra-squad game at Beckenham. Most of the other India A players are thought to have returned home.
Meanwhile, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to rejoin the group shortly, most likely on Tuesday. The former India opener returned to New Delhi from the United Kingdom owing to a family issue after his mother was sick. However, it is understood that he left the national capital for London on Tuesday morning.
The first Test of the newly called Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between England and India is set to begin on Friday, June 20 in Leeds.
