Rohit Sharma, Team India’s full-time ODI skipper, has been replaced by Shubman Gill, as stated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Rohit has been selected as the opening batsman for the forthcoming ODI series against Australia.
The 38-year-old has already retired from T20Is (after the successful T20 World Cup 2024) and Tests (before to England’s five-match series earlier this year). Rohit’s sole active format is now 50-over.
Rohit’s full-time tenure as ODI captain began in 2021, when he replaced Virat Kohli. Rohit has captained India in 56 ODIs. The squad has won 42 matches, lost 12, had one match drawn, and had one game cancelled due to poor weather. He finishes his tenure as ODI skipper with a 75% victory percentage.
Rohit won several bilateral series as ODI skipper. He was a member of the team which won the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. Rohit was the Men in Blue’s second-leading top-scorer with 177 runs in five matches back then. Under his captaincy, India recently won the 2025 installment of the Champions Trophy. He played a captain’s knock (76 off 83) in the final.
On many occasions, Rohit provided explosive starts at the top of the order. His ODI numbers in general are impeccable. Interestingly, Rohit’s stats while batting as ODI captain have been more impressive. In 56 matches (55 innings), Rohit has scored 2506 runs while averaging 52.20 at a strike rate of 111.97 with five centuries and 17 fifties under his belt.
