In the Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 9, the Indian team missed a total of four opportunities.
In the seventh over, Mohammed Shami had a fairly simple caught-and-bowled opportunity on the third delivery. It seems as though Shami did not anticipate Rachin Ravindra giving him the opportunity when he bowled from the right-the-wicket angle. He tried to duck away as his first stimulation, then raised his hand to try to grab the ball. When the ball struck Shami’s left hand, the physiotherapist was sent to address the situation right away.

The southpaw was given another lifeline in the very next over. At deep midwicket, Shreyas Iyer was the offender this time. Rachin top-edged a slog-sweep towards a vacant deep midwicket area in an attempt to continue Varun Chakravarthy’s enigmatic spin. Iyer started off with a deep backward square leg and sprinted about 20 meters to his right before suddenly lunging out with his hands outstretched.

Had Rohit Sharma not been able to get fingertips on Daryl Mitchell’s attempted pull shot from the left-armer, Axar Patel would have taken his first wicket of the evening. Despite his heroic efforts, the Indian captain was only able to tip it over the bar, allowing the set batsman to increase the total by two runs.

Shubman Gill was left perplexed by Ravindra Jadeja as the top-order batsman blew a pretty simple opportunity at deep midwicket. Gill was the target of a flat draw from Glenn Phillips from a length delivery on the middle stump. Even though the trajectory was dipping, it appeared like Gill did not fully read the ball’s movement in his direction. Though he was unable to hold on, he nearly lost his grip.

After reaching their 50-over quota, New Zealand finished with 251/7. Spinners claimed five of the Kiwis’ seven wickets. With 53* off 40 deliveries, Michael Bracewell finished undefeated. With stats of 1/30 in 10 overs, Jadeja proved to be India’s most economical bowler.
