India’s top fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, are pacers who have excelled in all three formats. Even though their contributions have been crucial to India’s success, the two have always worked well together on the pitch. It’s interesting to note that since 2016, the two have participated in 59 international games.
Both players have made few appearances together due to ailments that have struck them at various times. Because to injuries and tactical choices, their combined attendance at ICC events has frequently been rare. Together, Bumrah and Shami have participated in six ICC tournaments. These include the World Test Championship Final in 2021, the T20 World Cup in 2021, the Champions Trophy in 2017, the ODI World Cup in 2019, and the T20 World Cup in 2023.
Despite being a member of the squad, he did not play in any of the 2016 World T20 or 2017 Champions Trophy matches. Similar to this, Shami only appeared in four games during the 2019 ODI World Cup, replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar due to injury.
They have been much less available for ICC competitions from 2022.
Shami missed the 2024 T20 World Cup because of an ankle injury, and Bumrah missed both the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship final. The 2023 ODI World Cup, played in India, was their most recent ICC appearance together.
In the 59 games they have played together, the pair has taken 325 wickets, 31 of which India has won. Shami, meanwhile, returned to the Indian team by being included in the five Twenty20 Internationals against England that began on January 22. The star pacer is back after missing the last time he played for his country in the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. He had ankle surgery and experienced knee pain.
Conversely, Bumrah had an incredible Test series against Australia, winning Player of the Series after taking 32 wickets in five Test matches. The two are expected to lead India’s pace department in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be played in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, even if Bumrah has been rested for the Twenty20 Internationals against the Three Lions.
