With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket, the Indian cricketing community is about to undergo a significant transformation. Numerous cricket commentators have expressed their thoughts on the two players’ choices, particularly in light of the forthcoming England visit. The decision to retire from Test cricket, however, does not surprise Sunil Gavaskar.
Virat Kohli amassed 200 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25,
Including a century in the opening Test, while Rohit, the Indian captain, amassed a pitiful 31 runs from three games at a pitiful average of 6.20.
The 75-year-old claims that Virat and Rohit’s miserable Test tour to Australia served as the last straw for them both, as they have now justifiably hung their boots in the red-ball format.
“The choice to play or not to play is personal. But I’m not shocked since I expected significant changes following what transpired in Australia. Therefore, I don’t find it surprising that he chose to end his career,” Gavaskar stated, as cited by India Today.
Everyone desired the freedom to go on their own terms: Sunil Gavaskar.
Gavaskar added that there may have been discussions about the two cricketing gods’ futures with the BCCI and the selectors, and that the public would have preferred that the two contemporary greats retire on their own terms rather than being removed from the team beforehand.
That is precisely what would have occurred. Conversations and talks with them would have taken place. Senior board executives, the chairman of the selectors, and the selectors themselves would have all been consulted. For that reason, I stated that this did not come as a surprise to me. Since their removal from the squad is the one thing that no one would have wanted to witness, there would have undoubtedly been discussions with both of them. “No one would have desired that,” Gavaskar continued.
“Everyone wanted both of these amazing cricket players to retire on their own grounds. After telling the world they had had enough, they left,” the former India opener said.
