At Trent Bridge, India Women thrashed England Women by 97 runs in the opening T20Is of the five-match series. Despite being without their full-time captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, who was sidelined as a precaution after suffering a head injury during the warm-up match against ECB Select XI, the Smriti Mandhana-led team won handily.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and her daughters didn’t just lose; they lost badly. Their 97-run loss was the most significant in T20I history, surpassing the 93-run loss to Australia Women in the three-match T20I series at Chelmsford in July 2019.

After being brought in to bat first, India scored 210/5 at the end of 20 overs. Smriti celebrated her maiden T20I century in style, scoring 112 off 62 deliveries. The knock consisted of 15 fours and three sixes. This performance also made the left-handed opener the first Indian women’s player to record a century in all international formats.
Harleen Deol (43 from 23) was the team’s second-highest run scorer behind Smriti. The duo put up 94 runs in 45 balls for the second wicket. Lauren Bell (3/27) was amazed by the ball. Other than her, no other bowler could really stop the flow of runs. Linsey Smith (0/41 in three overs) and Sophie Ecclestone (1/43 in three overs) had unusual off days.
England’s wickets fell at regular intervals during their chase. Despite hitting 58 at the end of the powerplay, they had already lost three wickets. Sciver-Brunt ended up going alone, scoring 66 from 42 balls. However, she received no assistance from the other end.
N Shree Charani made a good debut, scoring 4/12 in 3.5 overs. Deepti Sharma (2/32 in three overs) and Radha Yadav (2/15 in two overs) provided solid support for her. Amanjot Kaur (1/22 in three overs) and Arundhati Reddy (1/18 in two overs) each took one wicket.
