India made history at Edgbaston, winning their first Test at the legendary venue with a strong performance in the second of five Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 matches. The visitors bowled out England to win by 336 runs and tie the series 1-1 after setting a massive goal of 608 runs, which the Bazball-driven hosts failed to meet.
India’s bowlers were relentless on Day 5.
Akash Deep struck first, startling Ollie Pope with a good-length delivery that rose up and slammed into his stumps. He followed it up with a blistering ball that pinned Harry Brook on the inside of his left knee, leaving the batter helpless as England collapsed to 83 for the loss of five wickets.
Next, wicketkeeper-batsman Jamie Smith came in to join captain Ben Stokes, and the two attempted to counter-attack by hitting the boundaries wherever possible. However, by lunchtime, England were reduced to 153 for 6, with Washington Sundar dismissing the England captain for only 33. Jamie Smith recorded his seventh fifty-plus score in 73 balls.
After the break, Prasidh Krishna struck from the Pavilion End, bowling a crisp delivery that shocked Chris Woakes with its bounce and velocity, resulting in a simple catch at midwicket. Smith, who had survived a close lbw call, reacted with back-to-back sixes, but Akash Deep finished his innings with a wide short ball that he nicked to Sundar in the deep.
Ravindra Jadeja then dismissed Josh Tongue with a superb catch by Mohammed Siraj, leaving India one wicket short of victory. Deep returned to grab the final wicket, sealing his maiden five-wicket haul in red-ball cricket and finishing with match figures of 10 wickets, becoming only the second Indian to achieve a 10-wicket haul in a Test in England, following Chetan Sharma (10/188), who did so at Edgbaston in 1986.
Shubman Gill, who led India with the bat, was named Player of the Match for his outstanding runs of 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. With the series even at 1-1, the third Test will commence on July 10 at Lord’s.
