The current Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 saw the Indian team get off to an incredible start. At the Optus Stadium in Perth, the visiting team defeated the hosts by an overwhelming 295 runs in the opening Test of the series versus Australia. India appeared to have little chance of making it to the 2025 WTC final.
But that fire has been rekindled after a decisive victory in Perth. There have been a lot of conversations about what would happen if the Indian team lost the next Test matches in Australia, since the second Test in Adelaide is very important for both Australia and India.
In other words, India would not be eligible to play in the World Test Championship final the following year if they lose the next matches in the BGT 2024–25. The Indian team’s chances of qualifying are mostly based on their standing in the WTC 2023–25 Points Table and the results of their matches against South Africa and Sri Lanka.
India will need to win as many games as possible in order to maximise their points in the rankings and earn a direct path to the final. Australia, on the other hand, will want to improve their standing position.
In reality, how can India make it to the WTC Final?
Regarding India’s qualification, Rohit Sharma and his team would advance straight to the final if they win the BGT by a score of 5-0, 4-0, 3-0, or 4-1 following New Zealand’s recent defeat to England in a Test match.
Additionally, if India wins the series 3-1 and South Africa defeats Sri Lanka at home in the second Test, they will also qualify. According to a different scenario, India would also qualify with a 3-2 BGT score, but Sri Lanka would need to draw at least one Test match against the Australians.
In a different scenario, even if Rohit Sharma‘s team draws the BGT 2024-25 by a score of 2-2, they could still advance to the WTC final. But for that to happen, South Africa would need to win both Test matches against Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka would need to win the series against Australia.
