So far, the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been an exciting one. As the season nears its conclusion, the Gujarat Titans (GT), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Mumbai Indians (MI) have all qualified for the playoffs.
During Sunday’s match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Lions (GT) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the IPL 2023 broke the record for the most sixes in a single season. In the 70th match of the current season, GT’s youthful opener Shubman Gill hit the 1063rd six of the season, surpassing the previous record of 1062 sixes set in the 2022 season.

The 2009 Indian Premier League season, which was played in South Africa because of the Lok Sabha elections, featured the fewest sixes. There were only 506 sixes in 59 contests, for an average of 8.58 sixes per match.
Faf du Plessis, captain of the RCB, leads the current season’s sixes statistics with 36 maximums from 14 matches. Additionally, the Proteas batsman leads the IPL 2023 Orange Cap rankings with 730 runs, including eight half-centuries, at an average of 56.15 and a strike rate of 153.0. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have hit the most sixes this season with 125 each.
Gayle owns the record for most sixes.
Chris Gayle, one of the most decorated batters in IPL history, holds the distinction of hitting the most sixes in the lucrative competition. The legendary West Indies batsman finished his IPL tenure with a staggering 357 sixes in 141 innings.
Gayle retains the record for most sixes hit in a single Indian Premier League season, with 59 in 2012. Other than Gayle, no other batter in IPL history has struck even 300 sixes.
With 256 maximums, India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is in second place on the sixes chart. AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli round out the top five with 251, 239, and 234 sixes, respectively.
