The India cricket team was told to stay indoors on the eve of their second Test of the ongoing five-match series against England after a suspicious parcel was discovered in the vicinity of Birmingham’s Centenary Square.
A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that the players were warned not to go out following a social media post by Birmingham City Centre Police. During the break between the first and second Tests, the players and support personnel were seen touring the neighbourhoods surrounding the lively Broad Street.
“We have a cordon in place around Centenary Square in Birmingham city centre as we investigate a suspicious item. We were notified shortly before 3 p.m., and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution until it is investigated. “Please avoid the area,” Birmingham City Centre Police wrote on X.
Eight members of the team, including captain Shubman Gill, had arrived for training in Edgbaston, while the remaining ten members had the day off. The cops lifted the cordon an hour later.
Returning to the present series, India is now trailing after the hosts won the series opener
Headingley by five wickets, chasing down a difficult 371-run mark and winning the battle in the last session of day five.
Despite taking a slim six-run lead in the first innings, India fell due to numerous missed catches and bowling indiscipline.
Edgbaston presents a stiffer challenge for India, as they have a poor record at the venue. Out of the eight Tests they have played at the venue so far, India have lost seven. Gill & Co. would be aiming to turn things around with four matches to go.
