IPL 2024: Delhi Capitals vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 35th Match - Who Said What?

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, April 20, the Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad played to a total of 465 runs scored.

All one desires is to be an impartial observer, but from the bowler’s point of view, it is imperative to discuss the game’s future. The Pat Cummins-led team shattered numerous records against DC tonight, and they were on the verge of breaking even more. Delhi, like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, has constructed a pitch that greatly benefits the hitters.

Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head got off to the greatest possible start at bat. In the powerplay, the pair scored 125 runs, the most in the format’s history. Head and Abhishek, the first two openers, caused chaos right away. Head scored 89 runs off 32 deliveries, and Abhishek nearly got the quickest half-century in IPL 2024 with 46 runs off 12 deliveries.

Once they returned to the pavilion, the run rate drastically decreased, although Shahbaz Ahmed and Nitish Reddy both played excellent batting, with the latter reaching a half-century. Though it wasn’t always the case, SRH’s incredible batting effort allowed them to score 266 runs, which ultimately proved to be plenty.

In the second innings, Delhi was just as merciless with the bat. The partnership of Abhishek Porel and Jake Fraser-McGurk persevered despite losing two early wickets, keeping DC in the game for an extended period of time. Jake proceeded to score 65 runs off of 18 deliveries, which was the fastest half-century in IPL 2024, while Porel scored 42 runs off of 22 balls. DC was competitive even after they were out, but their evening was marred by a subpar hitting display.

1. Kuldeep and Natarajan as silent heroes

Kuldeep Yadav and T Natarajan gave outstanding outings on a night when batters dominated and set records. Even though Kuldeep gave up 55 runs in four overs, he still managed to take four wickets. This was crucial since his outstanding effort prevented SRH from scoring 300 against DC. Natarajan was outstanding in the second innings as well, taking four wickets in his four overs while conceding just 19 runs, which is incredible in and of itself.

2. The siblings Bludgeon

Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head appeared invincible in the IPL 2024. Together, they once again intimidated the opposition and were instrumental in SRH scoring the fourth-highest total in IPL history. Together, they put together 131 runs against DC, and if other teams can’t find out how to stop them, SRH may end up winning the title.

3. Rishabh Pant’s subpar leadership

It was an error to give the ball to Lalit Yadav twice in the powerplay, particularly with Head and Abhishek playing so well and taking on bowlers. Pant made a strategic error with that one, which allowed the openers to become comfortable quite quickly. Pant may not be able to play in the T20 World Cup as he later had a very slow knock with the bat, scoring 44 runs off 35 balls.

Losing skipper Rishabh Pant said:

I think the only thought process behind it was there could be dew which didn’t come (on choosing to bowl first), but we would still have had a chance had we restricted them to 220-230. The powerplay was the difference, they got (125) runs and we ended up playing catching up after that.

The ball stopped more in the 2nd innings, that was more than we anticipated, but when we needed to chase 260, 270, you’ll need to keep scoring. Hopefully, we’ll come up with more thought process and a clear mindset going forward. His batting has been phenomenal (on Fraser-McGurk), he’s been nice for us, that’s what we need to do as a team, be together, look at areas where we can improve going into the next game.

Winning skipper Pat Cummins said:

Good record here, another great game of cricket. Need to keep that going. There wasn’t much for the bowlers in the powerplay. Got better for the bowlers when the ball got softer. Very excited to see them batting, but got to bowl in the second half. We were really disciplined with the ball, the bowlers executed their plans.

POTM Travis Head said:

It’s nice, we are on a roll. Boys are playing well, very enjoyable. Just tried to stay relaxed and hit the ball. Need to keep things simple, need to react to the balls. Very pleased to continue with the same form. He (Abhishek Sharma) plays well in the powerplay. He’s aggressive against spin, just let him do his things. Very enjoyable partnership with him. It’s hard to pick which guys are going to be the (impact) sub, everyone can bowl and contribute.

Nice to have a lot of options, we are able to score such high scores because of so many options available. It has also been difficult for our bowlers in the powerplay, but we did an exceptional job tonight. Just getting back into the swing of things (in the shortest format), nice to be batting top of the order.
