After the deadly Rajasthan Royals openers were removed for scores of 4 (2) and 19 (17) during the powerplay, chasing a target of 222 was never going to be an easy task. On May 7, though, Sanju Samson’s raucous innings maintained his team in the hunt for most of the chase against the Delhi Capitals. It appeared as though he would win his team’s match on his own after amassing his fifth half-century in 26 deliveries in the IPL 2024.
But RR needed sixty in twenty-six deliveries, and on the fourth delivery of the sixteenth over, he holed out to long-on, where Shai Hope held on to the catch. Both in real time and in the first few replays appeared to indicate he was out. But the third, altered-angle replay made people take notice. The third umpire made the ruling quickly, even though it was a close call, and informed the on-field umpire of the outcome.
Samson was clearly irritated and even made his way back to the middle to question the umpires and get a debriefing since it appeared from one viewpoint that Hope’s leg had made contact with the boundary cushion. He left in despair, though, as RR was eventually 20 runs short after he was ruled out.
When the game was over, Pant and Samson led their teams in the traditional post-game handshakes. Additionally, Pant was seen extending his sympathies to Samson with a warm embrace, demonstrating his regard for his Indian colleague. On X, the Indian Premier League’s official handle shared a preview of the same.
