Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) engaged in an exciting battle at the storied Chepauk Stadium in the third Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match. After winning the toss, CSK decided to bowl first, a move that immediately paid off as MI faltered in the power play.
Early on, the Mumbai Indians lost three crucial wickets, which led to a terrible start. Star batsman Rohit Sharma left for a duck, and Will Jacks (11) and Ryan Rickelton (13) did not have much of an effect. The first overs were dominated by CSK’s bowlers, which limited MI’s scoring chances. But Tilak Varma and captain Suryakumar Yadav’s vital partnership kept the innings steady. The pair kept MI’s chances alive by contributing more than 50 runs.
The game was flipped upside down by young Afghan spinner Noor Ahmed just as MI was about to accelerate. By getting rid of four important batsmen, he stopped MI’s momentum and kept them well below their potential total. Deepak Chahar’s late assault, which included some vital boundaries, helped MI score a solid 155 runs in the end.
After 1.4 overs, Rahul Tripathi fell early with the team at 11/1, giving CSK’s chase a rocky start.
However, New Zealand’s emerging sensation Rachin Ravindra took the lead alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The chase was set in motion by Gaikwad’s explosive performance, which saw him reach his fastest IPL fifty in just 22 balls.
By dismissing Gaikwad and taking three vital wickets in the middle overs, MI debutant Vignesh Puthur made an impression and briefly shifted the tide in MI’s advantage. Rachin Ravindra, however, remained composed and elegant. His undefeated 65 made sure CSK won by three wickets, starting their IPL 2025 campaign off on a high note. MI, however, carried on their losing run in their first game, which has continued since 2013.
