IPL 2025: CSK vs PBKS Match 49 - Who Said What?

The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered defeats against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025, once at home and once away. With this win, PBKS climbed to the 2nd spot on the points table. Meanwhile, CSK slumped to their eighth loss of the season and remained at the bottom of the table. This defeat also confirmed their elimination from IPL 2025.

Talking Points

PBKS’ bowlers give early blows to hosts at Chepauk

PBKS pacers Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen struck early by removing CSK’s top-order batters for meagre runs inside the powerplay. Shaik Rasheed (11 off 12), 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre (7 off 6), and Ravindra Jadeja (17 off 12) failed to build momentum and left CSK struggling at 48 for 3 at the end of the powerplay.

Curran-Brevis brew the inning deep

Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis guided the middle overs sensibly by keeping the scoreboard ticking. The duo stitched together a valuable 78-run partnership, with Brevis contributing 32 off 26 balls, and England batter Sam Curran unleashed 88 off just 47 deliveries.

Chennai fail to finish well

With only three wickets down by the 14th over, CSK appeared to be in a strong position. However, a collapse in the final six overs saw them bowled out for 190. The IPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker Yuzvendra Chahal turned the game for PBKS by claiming four wickets which included a sensational hat-trick in the 19th over, and it is his second in IPL history. He finished with impressive figures of 4 for 32 in his four-over spell.

Prabhsimran-Shreyas batting madness

After the dismissal of Priyansh Arya, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer joined hands with Prabhsimran Singh to steady the chase. The pair stitched together a crucial 72-run stand from just 50 balls, guiding PBKS closer to the finish line. Prabhsimran played a fluent knock of 54 off 36 deliveries, while Shreyas Iyer smashed 72 off 41. Shashank Singh also chipped in with a quick 23 off 12. Khaleel Ahmed and Matheesha Pathirana picked up two wickets each and it was not enough to stop the PBKS batters.

Who Said What?

MS Dhoni, CSK (Losing Captain)

I think the batting – Yes, it was the first time we put enough runs on the board. But was it a par score? I feel slightly short. Yes, a bit demanding from the batters but I feel we could’ve got slightly more. I feel we need to take our catches.

The partnership between Brevis and Sam was excellent. We didn’t play the last four deliveries, and the second last over four batters got out. In close games, those 7 deliveries mean a lot. Well he’s a fighter (Curran). That’s something we all know.

Whenever he turns up he wants to contribute. Unfortunately so far, whenever we tried to give him a chance, the wicket was on the slower side and he found it slightly difficult. But today’s wicket was one of the best we’ve got at home in this tournament. That’s the reason I felt we needed another 15 runs.

It’s the momentum in the middle order (Brevis offers). He’s also a very good fielder, he has power and he can hit good balls for boundaries. And he brings good energy. Happy with the way he’s playing. He can be an asset going ahead.

Shreyas Iyer, PBKS (Winning Captain & Player of the Match)

[On his form and knock] I love chasing on any field. I feel like I thrive whenever there is a big total on the board and you need to take the charge and momentum for the team for the rest of the batters to come and go full throttle. I don’t want to curse it [his away form] and just stay in the present and reacting to the ball. It doesn’t matter where I am playing.

I just play with my approach. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Lately I have been battin ga lot in the nets and facing the quick bowlers, especially with the new ball and that’s given me immense confidence. This is one part I have really worked on. And the attitude is something that I keep high whenever I approach the field. So I think all these small boxes have been ticked and that’s there to see.

More than batting, the fielding was difficult since I was running from long-on to long-on. We had to maintain over rate and I had to think at the nick of time. The humidity was more than any other field I’ve played on. [On the chase] We had a chat in between when Ricky came in and said we have to up the ante and not leave it to the end as they have great death bowlers.

So the approach was to just take on the bowlers with the power hitters coming down the order and back ourselves. When I got in I said that I need to play a few balls to see how the wicket is playing. When I played ten balls then I started going. Prabh and Priyansh have been fabulous the way they have been playing. They have been smart, not just slogging.
