IPL 2025: DC vs MI Match 29 - Who Said What?

At the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Delhi Capitals by 12 runs in match 29 of the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, causing the Capitals to suffer their first defeat of the year.

After DC captain Axar Patel won the toss, MI was asked to bat first and scored 205/5 thanks to a 59 off 33 balls from Tilak Varma. It appeared easy after the Southpaw hit six boundaries and three sixes. The final push for him came from Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), Ryan Rickelton (41 off 25), and Naman Dhir (unbeaten 38 off 17).

The DC bowlers had a number of notable moments with the ball. Kuldeep Yadav was exceptional with scores of 2/23, while Vipraj Nigam took 2/41, which featured the crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, respectively.

Talking Points

1. Tilak-Naman’s partnership take Mumbai to a good total

When Naman Dhir came out to join Tilak Verma in the middle of the 15th over, the Mumbai Indians were down 138/4. In 5.3 overs, the two scored 62 runs for the fifth wicket. The two ensured Mumbai’s respectable total of 205 despite a strong bowling assault. By skilfully rotating the stroke and taking calculated risks to get the fours and sixes, the two were a fantastic combination.

Tilak was the first to attack the stand before Dhir let loose his powerful blows. In Mitchell Starc’s 18th over of the innings, the two hit three fours.  Dhir had a strong cameo, scoring three fours and two sixes at 17-ball 38 not out.  After holing out in the deep for a solid 33-ball 59 with six fours and three sixes, Tilak was removed in the final over.

2. Karun Nair turns up the heat

Karun Nair delivered a standout performance for Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians, smashing 89 runs off just 40 balls. His explosive knock included 12 fours and 5 sixes, showcasing a strike rate of 222.50. Nair’s aggressive innings provided Delhi with serious momentum and highlighted his ability to dominate the opposition. He was eventually dismissed by Mitchell Santner, but not before making a massive impact with the bat.

3. Karn Sharma leads fightback

Before Mumbai’s Impact Player Karn Sharma’s outstanding bowling stint of 3/36 pulled his team back into the match, Delhi was easily reaching the goal of 206.  Before Karn got Abishek Porel to hole out in the deep, Delhi was down 119/1 in 10.1 overs.  But when Karn got KL Rahul to top-edge a sweep back to him, he made the biggest breakthrough.

To put Delhi on the defensive, he also got rid of the dangerous Tristan Stubbs.  With Ashutosh Sharma at the crease, Delhi was still in the match, though.  Nevertheless, Mumbai won the match with three consecutive run-outs in the penultimate over thanks to a strong fielding performance. Additionally, a few outstanding catches in the deep by Mumbai fielders were noteworthy.

Who said What?

Hardik Pandya, MI Captain

Winning is always special, especially wins like this. He (Karun) was batting brilliantly, it seemed like it was going out of hand. (On Karn Sharma) Shows great character, to be brave and toss it up when the boundaries are just 60m long. We never gave up, we kept saying we want to stay in the contest. Everyone put their hand up and we were able to hold on to our chances.

(On the batting order) Wanted to get the players in form to face the most balls. Dew played a big factor later on, it got very dewy. Just by making sure the game is not over, “keep fighting” was the chatter. We knew a couple of wickets would change the game. It has happened with me before as well, wins like this change the momentum and turn everything around.

Axar Patel, DC Captain

We had the game in the bag. Some soft dismissals and bad shots in the middle order. You can’t leave it to the batters in the lower order everytime. Don’t need to overthink, just one of those days. Was happy at the halfway stage.

The ball was stopping initially but it got better. And then dew helped us further. Out of our three spinners, two can bowl in powerplay and death as well. Kuldeep is bowling unbelievably well. Need to forget this game from a batting point of view.

Karn Sharma, Player of the Match

Feels very good that my hard work has paid off. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do my best. It’s a big tournament, only 12 can play. I just focus on my process, rest is not in my hands. KL Rahul’s wicket was my favourite. That catch was very important at that stage of the game.

I pray a lot that I do well when I get a chance and that the teams win. There was no dew in the first innings, changing the ball meant that we got some more grip. That was good.
