The 53rd IPL 2025 match between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) is now taking place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. For KKR, winning this game is essential because it will keep their prospects of making the playoffs alive. In the meantime, RR has already lost the competition. As a result, unlike the home team, they are playing with little to think about.
On Sunday, May 4, Ajinkya Rahane, the home captain, won the toss and decided to bat first. In the second over, Yudhvir Singh Charak got rid of Sunil Narine (11 off 9) to draw the first blood for the visitors. Ajinkya Rahane and Rahmanullah Gurbaz shared 56 runs after his wicket before the former was removed for 35 runs off 25 balls. Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi kept advancing their collaboration.
The captain of the home team was dismissed by Riyan Parag for 30 runs off 24 balls in the thirteenth over. Andre Russell (57* off 25) came in early today and wrecked havoc on the bowlers towards the end of the innings, which was when the real hitting began. He helped KKR to a decent score of 206 by forming a strong partnership with Raghuvanshi (44 off 31). Rinku Singh (19* off 6) hammered 18 runs off Akash Madhwal in the final over.
“I still feel like I’m 27, but age is just a number.” We are all aware of the significance of this game, and I am pleased with the final score. [After the spinners, on Madhwal]. I don’t mind a few dot balls here and there, but I didn’t want to take a chance against Theekshana too soon after realising the wicket was becoming dangerous. I knew what I could do in the back half, so I didn’t want to take a chance early when they were bowling solid places. The slower balls were gripping, and Hasaranga was bowling in good spots. After the first innings, Russell stated on air, “I can do more the more overs I have.”
Since the RR bowlers were unable to break three partnerships today, their bowling was not very spectacular. A couple of receptions that could have altered the outcome of the game were also missed. To win the game, the youthful RR openers will now need to score the majority of the runs.
