Despite losing two wickets in the first three overs of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, April 3, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) concluded with a respectable score of 200/6.
In a rematch of the previous year’s final, Pat Cummins chose to field first after winning the toss. In the second over, Quinton de Kock was removed by the SRH captain. After dismissing Sunil Narine in the third over, Mohammed Shami also claimed a number of wickets. But KKR remained strong as skipper Ajinkya Rahane and the highly effective Angkrish Raghuvanshi attacked the Sunrisers bowlers.
They established a solid foundation for the big hitters to follow with an outstanding 81-run partnership off 51 deliveries. Rahane scored 38 (27) and Raghuvanshi scored 50 (32), respectively, before leaving quickly afterward. During their daring 91-run partnership off 41 balls, Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh teamed up and played some amazing strokes.
In the final over, Venkatesh was out after reaching 60 off 29 balls. During his dazzling knock, he blasted three sixes and seven fours. As KKR reached 200/6 in their 20 overs, Rinku remained undefeated at 32 off 17. All of the SRH bowlers that bowled that evening, with the exception of Simarjeet Singh, claimed one wicket.
Venkatesh reported that the ball was holding up fairly well during the mid-innings break. He believed that KKR had put up a respectable score and that they would win their second game of the season with some strong bowling and fielding.
“I think this is a pretty competitive score; if we bowl and field well, we should win this. It was clear that the ball was holding up a little, unlike the Eden I have played over the last two years. Ajinkya (Rahane) and Angkrish (Raghuvanshi) were excellent at setting up the innings for us, but it was difficult to make strokes since the ball was holding a little bit. I watched the game on a screen.
After his thrilling knock, Venkatesh told the official broadcaster, “It helps a lot, the BCCI has made it mandatory for everyone to play domestic cricket and it gives us a good chance of playing against good bowlers. You’ve seen so many bowlers coming around and it’s very challenging playing against them.”
