Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings squared off in the fifth game of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Gujarat Titans chose to bowl first after winning the toss.
With 74 runs at a cost of just one wicket, Punjab Kings got off to a fast start in the powerplay. Alongside Priyansh Arya (47 runs), debut skipper Shreyas Iyer batted vigorously, anchoring their innings. After the tenth over, though, when Punjab Kings lost two quick wickets, including Glenn Maxwell for a first-ball duck, the momentum somewhat changed.
Shreyas Iyer carried on with his assault, scoring an incredible undefeated 97 off just 42 balls in spite of the slight setback. Marcus Stoinis (20 runs) and Shashank Singh, who was undefeated with 44 off just 16, provided him with strong support. Together, they helped Punjab Kings to a commanding 243/5 in 20 overs.
In response, the Gujarat Titans got off to a strong start as openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill attacked the bowlers of the Punjab Kings. But on the last over of the powerplay, Gill was dismissed. Jos Buttler and Sudharsan established a vital partnership at No. 3, dominating the opposition bowling attack.
Arshdeep Singh gave Gujarat a break just as they appeared to be cruising by removing the steady Sudharsan for 74 off 41. The Titans looked to be headed for an easy chase at 169/2 after 14 overs. Vijaykumar Vyshak, an impact player for Punjab, however, changed the course of the match with a remarkable last over in which he gave up just 28 runs in his three overs. His methodical bowling enabled Punjab Kings to defend the total and win by an exciting 11 runs.
