The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners, are almost eliminated from the playoff battle for the current campaign. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated the MS Dhoni-led team by five wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, their home field, resulting in their seventh defeat of the season.
Speaking of the game, SRH urged CSK to post runs on the scoreboard after winning the toss. Rachin Ravindra was dropped, and Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre were the new opening duo for the home team as they began the innings. Rasheed registered a golden duck, so the modification didn’t exactly pay off. However, Mhatre persisted in demonstrating his intent and continued to score runs at a steady clip.
Harshal Patel was later brought into the attack by SRH captain Pat Cummins, and he dismissed Sam Curran in the fifth over. Mhatre was subsequently removed by Cummins himself on 30 runs in the very next over. After attempting to form a partnership with rookie Dewald Brevis, Ravindra Jadeja was sent back to the pavilion by Kamindu Mendis’ outstanding delivery.
Despite Brevis’ outstanding shoots, Mendis was once again the cause of CSK’s subsequent dismissal. Brevis’ 42-run knock was stopped by a brilliant catch by Mendis at the boundary rope. Following that, CSK found it difficult to score runs and only managed to score 154. The standout bowler for SRH was Harshal, who took four wickets in his allotted four overs while giving up just 28 runs.
In the first over of the innings, SRH’s explosive opening batsman Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a duck while chasing the score. The scoreboard was maintained, though, by Travis Head and Ishan Kishan, before Anshul Kamboj destroyed Head with a stunning delivery. Kishan, the hitter who has been out of form, struck 44 runs off 34 deliveries and held the one end safe with solid play.
Noor Ahmad also gave CSK two crucial breakthroughs: Kishan and Aniket Verma. Heinrich Klaasen was also despatched quite cheaply by Jadeja on just seven runs. Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s undefeated 49-run partnership for the sixth wicket gave the team a five-wicket victory, even though it appeared as though CSK was regaining the lead.
