Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by an incredible 16 runs in an exciting low-scoring match at Mullanpur that will go down as one of the most spectacular comebacks in IPL history. KKR crumbled under pressure while chasing a goal of 112, being bowled out for just 95 in 15.1 overs, thanks to a pivotal session from Marco Jansen and a four-wicket haul from Yuzvendra Chahal.
With Ajinkya Rahane (17) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (37) calming the pursuit after early losses, KKR appeared to be in good control at 62 for 2. However, Chahal’s decision to dismiss Rahane in the eighth over—which he did not review—caused a startling collapse. KKR was left surprised at 76 for 7 as Chahal quickly took the wickets of Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, and Raghuvanshi.
Despite raising KKR’s hopes with a fast 17 from 11 balls, Andre Russell was unable to finish the chase. With just tailenders remaining and 17 required, Jansen bowled Russell with a spectacular delivery to give PBKS the victory, the lowest total ever defended in IPL history.
The way KKR used the ball earlier in the evening was amazing. In 15.3 overs, they destroyed PBKS for just 111 after being asked to field first. With a double-wicket over that eliminated PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer and Priyansh Arya, Harshit Rana finished with figures of 3 for 25. Varun Chakravarthy (2/21) and Sunil Narine (2/14) deceived the Punjab hitters, and Anrich Nortje and Vaibhav Arora also contributed.
With Arya and Prabhsimran Singh scoring 33 runs in just three overs, PBKS got off to a strong start. However, Rana’s spell changed the tide of the match. Nehal Wadhera, Glenn Maxwell, and Josh Inglis were all cheaply removed during the middle-order collapse. Additionally, Suryansh Shedge’s first appearance as an Impact Sub did not work out, as PBKS was dismissed with over four overs remaining. Punjab’s bowlers, however, gave a spectacular reply. Chahal’s abilities in the middle overs turned the tide of the match after early strikes from Xavier Bartlett and Jansen.
