The hosts The Mumbai Indians (MI) won their first IPL 2025 match after dominating the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in every aspect of the game. The five-time champions had a successful return, as the famed Wankhede Stadium turned out to be MI’s lucky charm. MI defeated KKR handily thanks to the bowling unit’s combined effort and the vital contributions of the fielders and batsmen.
MI did not let their home crowd down despite losing away games to CSK and GT. They achieved their first victory of the season and continued their lopsided winning streak against KKR. The Mumbai-based team desperately needed the victory, particularly after losing badly in their last game and putting in little effort to win.
Key Moments from MI vs KKR, Match 12 of IPL 2025
1. MI reduce KKR to 45/5 in first seven overs
Bowling first, MI wasted no time as they tore through the KKR batting lineup. In the very first over of the match, Trent Boult dismissed Sunil Narine for a silver duck. From the other end, Deepak Chahar ran riot, claiming the wickets of Quinton de Kock and Venkatesh Iyer.
Debutant Ashwani Kumar needed just one ball to claim his maiden scalp, dismissing Ajinkya Rahane and helping MI make further inroads into the KKR innings. Hardik Pandya then joined the party, sending a dangerous-looking Angkrish Raghuvanshi back to the pavilion for 26 (16).
2. Ashwani Kumar registers best bowling figures for an Indian on IPL debut
It was undoubtedly the night of Ashwani Kumar, as the youngster stole the show. The talented pacer registered the best bowling figures for an Indian bowler on his IPL debut, dismantling the KKR batting lineup. Kumar took down key players, including Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell.
In his spell of three overs, Ashwani claimed four wickets while conceding just 24 runs at an economy rate of 8.00. He made an instant impact, dismissing Rahane with his very first ball in the IPL. He later cleaned up the stumps of Pandey and Russell and got rid of Rinku, shifting the momentum firmly in MI’s favour.

3. Ryan Rickleton registers his maiden IPL fifty
Ryan Rickleton registered his first fifty in IPL history. MI needed to chase just 117 runs, which wasn’t a difficult task at all. The Southpaw batted without any pressure. He went after the bowlers early in the innings and killed the chances of KKR’s win. He then anchored the run chase, allowing others to bat aggressively.
The South African batter was impressive in the middle, as he played the pacers and the spinners well. The star batter scored an unbeaten 62*(41), which included 4 fours and 5 sixes. Along with Suryakumar Yadav’s blitz, Rickleton safely took MI home.
