In match No. 3 of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated archrivals Mumbai Indians (MI) by four wickets on Sunday, March 23.
After winning the toss, Ruturaj Gaikwad chose to bowl first on a new surface. Khaleel Ahmed dismissed the Indian captain off the fourth after bowling three dot balls to Rohit Sharma in the opening over. In his second over, the left-arm spinner got rid of rookie Ryan Rickelton. Ravichandran Ashwin defeated Will Jacks in his opening over, making his homecoming with CSK unforgettable.
Mumbai needed a partnership after losing three wickets in the first five overs, and Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, the stand-in skipper, provided it. They strengthened the Mumbai innings by adding 51 runs off of 36 balls. But by taking four wickets before the end of the innings, Noor Ahmad was able to put Chennai back into the match on his own.
MI fell to 128/8 at the end of the 18th over after being 87/3 in the 11th. Deepak Chahar’s late attack (28* off 15 balls) enabled the visitors to surpass the 150-run threshold. Mumbai’s final score after 20 overs was 155/9. With a remarkable 4/18 in four overs, Noor Ahmad was the star with the ball.
Rahul Tripathi, an Impact Player, was dismissed by Chennai in the second over of their reply. Rachin Ravindra and Gaikwad formed a partnership of 67 runs off of just 37 balls after Gaikwad joined him in the middle. However, Rachin played second fiddle while Gaikwad put on a one-man show, scoring 53 off just 26 balls.
Against the flow of play, young rookie Vignesh Puthur got rid of Gaikwad in the ninth over. Puthur also defeated Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda, as the left-arm wrist-spinner gave Mumbai the chance to win a game they would never forget. Chennai needed an additional 40 runs to win off the final 35 balls, when Sam Curran was removed by Will Jacks after playing a poor shot.
Rachin, who exuded poise from the opposite end, remained with Ravindra Jadeja. To push CSK to the limit, they added a vital 36-run partnership off 27 balls. After Jadeja was run out in the penultimate over with four runs remaining for victory, the audience witnessed MS Dhoni walking out to bat. Rachin smashed a six off Mitchell Santner to give his team the victory with five balls remaining after the great cricketer blocked two deliveries from Naman Dhir. At 65 off 45 balls, the Kiwi all-rounder ended the match undefeated.
