Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by eight wickets in Match 6 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Both sides needed to win after dropping their season-opening matches, but after 37.3 overs of play, KKR proved to be too formidable.
RR was limited to 151/9 by KKR’s disciplined bowling unit after they choose to bowl first. The bowlers were outstanding without Sunil Narine, with Vaibhav Arora (2/33), Moeen Ali (2/23), Varun Chakravarthy (2/17), and Harshit Rana (2/36) all making contributions. Rajasthan’s batters were unable to form partnerships, and RR’s consistent wicket-taking resulted in a mediocre score on an excellent batting ground.
With an undefeated 97 off 61 balls, Quinton de Kock dominated the RR bowlers as they chased 152. Even though RR started out well, De Kock’s 36-ball fifty, which included eight fours and six sixes, put him in top form. He scored 36 runs with pull shots after ruthlessly thrashing the short balls. He finished the game in spectacular fashion by hitting a huge six off Jofra Archer to clear long-on. With 15 balls remaining, KKR won with to his spectacular knock, moving them up to sixth place in the standings while RR fell to the bottom.
While Narine was away, the bowlers for KKR were able to carry out their plans with success. RR’s batsmen were stifled by Chakravarthy’s variations, while Moeen Ali demonstrated his inclusion with incisive deliveries. By preventing any unions from taking off, Pacemen Arora and Rana disrupted RR’s middle order. Spencer Johnson let up 42 runs, but his early success kept the score in check.
It seems like Riyan Parag was out of place without Sanju Samson. His field placements were reactive and his bowling choices were erratic as KKR’s hitters went wild. Since Samson hasn’t entirely healed, RR needs to get back on track and avoid other setbacks.
While RR needs to address Parag’s inexperience as captain and their batting collapses, KKR will want to build on this momentum. RR needs a comeback after two straight defeats in order to stay in the running for the 2025 IPL.
